A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Mayor.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as sparing festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a Donald Trump moment this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a long and happy life free from concern.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “6-7” – inspired by a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to begin the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: joyful, diverse, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Every time, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
