US Pledges an Major Aid Contribution, Issuing a Blunt Message to United Nations.
In a move that combines financial support with a firm ultimatum, Washington has committed $2 billion to support United Nations emergency relief programmes. However, this contribution came with a direct admonition for the international body: it must "adapt or die."
A Significant Pledge During Wider Budget Reductions
The funding announcement was declared amid major cuts in American funding for humanitarian operations. Additional reductions are expected from other key donors such as European nations. The US representative, President Trump's Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, delivered the announcement alongside the UN's top humanitarian official.
"This contribution will help save countless lives," affirmed the UN's humanitarian chief. However, the $2 billion is only a fraction of the United States' traditional contributions, which previously totaled approximately $17 billion in the recent past.
Aid Accompanied by Major Restrictions
This new American aid is not without restrictions. It is earmarked for a select group of 17 nations, such as Syria, Sudan, and Haiti. Crucially, Yemen and Afghanistan are explicitly left off the list.
The US official explained this decision by pointing to evidence that in Afghanistan, aid money were being diverted to the Taliban. "President Trump will never tolerate any amount of public funds supporting organizations designated as terrorists," he stated firmly.
Additionally, the stipulations prohibit spending on projects related to tackling climate change, deemed not "essential for survival" and not in "American interests."
The Blunt "Evolve or Perish" Warning
Delivering a blunt warning, the US official warned the UN that it must "change or face irrelevance." He emphasized that the US "treasury will not support agencies that seek to cling to previous methods."
This official, a known architect behind the shutdown of a major US aid agency, called for targeted and effective aid with no overlap among projects. The relief coordinator and UN officials say they wholehearted support for these principles, arguing that wise spending benefits all, particularly the hundreds of millions individuals affected by emergencies.

The core tenets of impartial assistance – being neutral, impartial, and directed to the most needy – are challenged by excluding entire nations or issues like climate change.
The consequences of funding cuts are already visible. There have been shutdowns of mother and baby clinics in one excluded country and cut nutritional support for refugees in another nation. Worldwide, after years of decline, child mortality rates are projected to rise in the near future.
